It is known that the minerals in tap water which are left behind on windows cause spots and smears. Therefore it is necessary in the water purification process these are removed via reverse osmosis systems.

Reverse osmosis works by filtering water through a semi-permeable membrane that only allows pure water molecules to pass through leaving the impurities (minerals in tap water) behind. This four stage filtration process involves the filtration of sediment and carbon from the water followed by reverse osmosis. This produces pure water with up to 98% of contaminants removed before the water is subject to the final process, deionisation. The deionisation stage polishes the 98% pure water to remove the remaining contaminants.
